Penélope Cruz Sánchez was born in Madrid, Spain. After studying classical ballet for nine years at Spain's National Conservatory, she continued her training under a series of prominent dancers. At fifteen however, she followed her higher calling when she beat hundreds of other girls in Spain at a talent agency audition. That landed her several roles on a number of Spanish T.V. shows and music videos. Penelope Cruz made her feature film debut in 'Jamon Jamon,' in 1992, and then in the Oscar-winning motion picture 'The Age of Beauty,' in which she played one of four sisters vying for the love of a handsome army deserter. The film also garnered several Goya awards—Spain's top film award.
More than a regularly working film actress, Penelope Cruz was now a star of Spanish cinema. The film 'Live Flesh' brought her to working with renowned auteur Spanish director Pedro Almodóvar, which was one of her dreams as an actress to achieve. Working with Pedro Almodovar led to her international fame, as the director chose to cast her in numerous other films he created. The same year, she was the lead actress in the film 'Open Your Eyes,' a huge hit in Spain that earned eight Goya awards. In 1998, she starred in the comedy 'The Girl of Your Dreams' for which she won a Best Actress Goya. Her first international hit was later Pedro Almodóvar's 'All About My Mother,' in which she played a nun. She was now in demand around the world.
Her next big project was 'Woman on Top,' an American comedy about a chef with bewitching culinary skills and a severe case of motion sickness. While in the US, she also signed up to star opposite Johnny Depp in the drug-trafficking drama 'Blow' and opposite Matt Damon in Billy Bob Thornton's 'All the Pretty Horses.' In addition to many other films, some of her other most notable works include in the hit, cult classic motion picture 'Vanilla Sky,' also starring Tom Cruise, the outstanding motion picture 'Volver,' again with Pedro Almodovar helming, and the steamy, romantic comedy 'Vicky Cristina Barcelona' directed by Woody Allen, in which Penelope Cruz shares a romantic kiss with another actress that made this list- Scarlett Johansson. Yet another outstanding film by Pedro Almodovar saw the friends re-team again for 'Broken Embraces.' Next, Penelope Cruz's singing and dance skills were put to use in the beautifully shot musical 'Nine.' She later appeared in 'Sex and the City 2,' and reportedly will be starring next in the motion pictures titled 'To Rome With Love,' 'Venuto al mondo,' and 'The Counselor,' the latter also reportedly starring Brad Pitt and yet another actress also on this list—Angelina Jolie.
With an endearing, sweet public persona, a commitment to animal rights, an integrity of making actable choices concerning art first and commerce second, and with a beautiful, exotic look, and massive talent, Penelope Cruz is without a doubt one the top 10 Hottest Actresses of our time, and she keeps getting better and better.
